We have a whole bunch to be thankful for, and this week, we kick off our “Gratitude” series with an amazing trio and a fabulous local bookshop!
Dear Darling
I met Casey Lipka several years ago while I was singing with a local choir, RSVP. She teamed up with the group for a series of concerts benefitting a local charity. Since then, I have run into Casey throughout Sacramento at various musical events, and I have always enjoyed our conversations and meetings!
In the summer of 2020, I reconnected with Casey. She organized a virtual songwriting, co-writing workshop which I attended. She gathered a bunch of musicians online, gave a prompt for writing, and we all sat on mute and wrote songs apart-together! Creative and innovative things like these are things that I admire about Casey and her musicianship and friendship!
Fast forward to NOW! Casey has teamed up with two other talented musicians, Hannah Jane Kile and Natalie Hagwood, to form Dear Darling! This folk-rooted, jazz-inspired trio writes songs that speak to the listener on a personal level, like a hand written letter to the audience! Each member of the group is a first-class musician in their own right, but together, they are an emotional powerhouse with tight harmonies, and lilting melodies!
Check out Casey’s portion of the show this week, but don’t miss the next two episodes for more Dear Darling! Learn more about Dear Darling at deardarlingmusic.com.
Ruby’s Books
If you didn’t know by now, we LOVE books! On a visit to Sutter Street in Folsom, we stumbled upon a new local book shop. It is rare in today’s world that you find a NEW independent book store! Ruby’s books has been only been open for a little more than a year, but already they are making quite an impression on their community.
It was at Ruby’s that we met Lisa Frenkel Riddiough (check out her Book Bag segment here). We have also met other local authors, attended a children’s book club meeting, and purchased a bunch of amazing books!
We hope you are inspired by this interview to check out your local bookshop and find a book that feels like home!
“When Your Open Up A Book”
This week’s original song was inspired by our visit to Ruby’s Books. I have also been listening to quite a bit of Dan Bern and Bob Dylan this week, and it definitely spilled over into my songwriting. We hope you have fun with this one!
