What a whirlwind of a weekend! So many Sing Show! things going on, and somehow, we made it!
This week’s episode is quite a collaboration. We have our second installment of our segment with Dear Darling, plus we have teamed up with Earth Art Creative’s Mrs. Rachel for our Mini Maker Moment!
Earth Arts Creative
We stumbled upon Mrs. Rachel’s Instagram page, @earthartcreative, a few months ago when we saw some photos of robots her kids had built from recycled materials! It reminded us of the robots we made back in our “Robots” episode from Season 2. Long story short: We posted a comment; There were replies; We had a Zoom meeting; Voila!
One of the things that Mrs. Rachel shared with us while chatting in our development meeting was that she not only emphasizes creating projects from reusable items, but also what to do with the projects once you are ready to get rid of them.
In working with children, she shows them how to break apart their old projects back into their component parts so that they may be reused, recycled, or placed in the garbage responsibly.
This was inspiring! We have used recyclables in projects for years, encouraging students to give a second life to items that might otherwise end up in the recycle bin or garbage. This added layer to the upcycled crafting movement of what to do when that cardboard and duct tape robot needs to go is not something we hear very often from makers, and something we think needs to be taught as part of the whole process.
We hope you will create a gratitude jar with your family this season and keep adding to it throughout the year! And don’t forget: when your inner Marie Kondo comes knocking, make sure to dismantle your project before you thank it, and send it on it’s way!
Dear Darling
Last week, we introduced our Sing Show! family to Dear Darling, and they are back this week to share more! This week, guitarist, Hannah Jane Kile, talks about writing from your emotions and using music to create moods!
Hannah is a fabulous guitarist who also happens to be an amazing vocalist as well! You can check out her solo projects and more about her other music projects at hannahjanekile.com
We hope you enjoy getting to know Hannah, and don’t forget to check out part 3 of this series featuring the third “darling,” Natalie Hagwood, as well as a special performance with all three members of Dear Darling!
“Canon of Emotions”
Joshua here:
My song for this week was quite a different direction from the others I have written. There were all kinds of ideas I was toying around with over the week. I started a song about gratitude jars, re-recycling, collaboration, and several other false starts. After a conversation with Jen, I decided to tackle writing a song about the life-cycle of a seed and how each stage was a metaphor for our different emotional states.
About half-way through writing, I realized that the lyrics I had written didn’t have anything to do with seeds, and were really pretty straight forward emotions. So I went with that.
This song also was written to be sung with four repeating parts (ostinato for the musicians in the house… I know… not “technically” a canon). I originally thought I would just sing all the parts myself, but after a bit of thought, I knew that the Sing Show! puppets were the perfect vehicle for this. I was even able to manufacture a call back to Hannah’s segment earlier when she played an example of what a “frustrating” song might sound like. Melvin sings, “I can’t take it anymore! I’m blazing! Blazing! I can’t take it anymore! It’s so frustrating!”
It’s not Bach or Pachelbell, but we hope it will do for Sing Show!
Thank You
Last Saturday was our first in-person show at the Strum Shop in Roseville. First of all, thank you to all who came out to support us! It was nice to be surrounded by supportive friends and family to dip our toes into this new adventure! We hope you had even half as much fun as we did.
If you missed the show, we filmed the show and plan to share some clips from the concert in upcoming newsletters. We are also making plans for future live events this Spring! Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching Sing Show!
